I build things to find out how they work. That curiosity runs through an inference engine written from scratch for the browser, a tour of why GPUs spend so much time waiting on memory, and a detour through Claude Shannon’s 1948 paper because a tokenizer raised a question I couldn’t let go of.
In Serenity, I approach GPU performance from the rendering side. Moving lights give me a way to study techniques that also matter to inference, with an image at the end where people can see what the kernel work makes possible. Cradle takes the teaching route: in Let’s Build a Transformer!, we build an inference engine in C# with .NET developers, explaining the code and checking each new piece as the program grows.
The usual advice is to pick one narrow specialty and stay in it. I’ve never managed it. Every field I dig into turns out to have a problem another field already solved, and finding that connection is the best part of the work. Shannon worked the same way: information theory, a maze-solving mechanical mouse, juggling machines, and a unicycle he rode through the halls of Bell Labs. I’ve kept the curiosity and skipped the unicycle.
I learned technical writing on nuclear power plant operations in the Navy, writing operating policies and procedures. Writeups of mine became a troubleshooting appendix in the water chemistry manual, best-practice guidelines adopted at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, changes to the Navy’s Radiological Controls Manual, and a long run of standing orders and guidance at the squadron level. The habit stuck: every build here ends in a write-up.
Projects get names with a lineage. Seymour is named for Seymour Cray, who spent his career keeping the math fed. The rest of that name is an easter egg. Charlotte lives on the web and writes words. Ariadne is named for the thread through the labyrinth; Shannon’s maze-solving mouse was called Theseus.
